The place of montelukast In the treatment of asthma In adults
Abstract
Bronchial asthma is a globally widespread chronic disease which incurs significant economic
costs. Anti-inflammatory medications, particularly the inhaled corticosteroids (ICS), are the basis of
asthma treatment. The leukotriene receptor antagonists (LTRA), where montelukast belongs, are an
alternative of the ICS. Apart from the possibility to be used as monotherapy, LTRA can also be used
in combination with an ICS for treatment of uncontrolled asthma. The efficacy of LTRA in improving
asthma control is proven in a number of international clinical trials, where they have been used alone
or as part of different combined therapeutic approaches. LTRA show significant advantages in the
treatment of patients with co-morbid asthma and allergic rhinitis. LTRA therapy offers an opportunity
for effective asthma control in adults and a better quality of life for this group of patients.
