Резюме
Aim. To produce an epidemiological study of the frequency of COPD based on current and
representative sample of the population.
Material and Methods. We screened 2 047 people aged 40-69 who filled in a specially-prepared
respiratory questionnaire and performed a post bronchodilator spirometry. The disease was defined
using post bronchodilator FEV1/FVC <0.7 (GOLD - Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung
Disease).
Results. The study determined a prevalence of 14.9% within the population in the region: males/
females (21.6%/10.8%; р<0.001), age <55/ >55 (11.2%/17.1%; р<0.001), urban/rural population
(13.9%/18.8%; р<0.05), Bulgarian/Roma (14.9%/15.2%; р>0.05). According to the risk factors we
estimated a different prevalence and chance for the development of COPD: tobacco smoking (23.2%,
OR95%CI=12.2), occupation (7.3%, OR95%CI=3.5), frequent respir. infections (15.8%,OR95%CI= 8.3), family
history (13.2%, OR95%CI= 6.9), air pollution (2.3%, OR95%CI=1.1), coal healting (3.6%, OR95%CI=1.9), with
multiple rick (28.1%, OR95%CI=14.8).
